Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a top-down adventure set in a coloring-book world whose color has vanished after Chicory — superstar artist and wielder of the Brush — goes missing. As the new Brush-wielder, the player can paint on almost anything to explore, solve puzzles and help the land's animal inhabitants.1 Directed by Greg Lobanov and published by Finji, it released on 10 June 2021 for PC and PlayStation.12

Gameplay

Painting is the verb for everything: navigation, puzzle-solving, decorating, and expression. The game supports solo play and two-player local co-op.1

Development and release

The credited team includes director Greg Lobanov, artist and animator Alexis Dean-Jones, environment artist Madeline Berger, sound designer Em Halberstadt, and composer Lena Raine, known for Celeste.3 The game was made in GameMaker, whose official showcase features it.4

After the June 2021 launch, Chicory came to Nintendo Switch on 15 December 20215 and to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S — including Xbox Game Pass — on 30 May 2023.67

Awards

Chicory won the Family category at the 2022 BAFTA Games Awards.8 At the 2021 Independent Games Festival it was a finalist for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize and received Honorable Mentions in Excellence in Audio, Design and Visual Art.9 It was also nominated for Games for Impact at The Game Awards 2021.10
