# Wholesome Games
**Wholesome Games** is a curation project, showcase producer and publishing label devoted to games that evoke comfort, compassion and coziness. It began in 2019 as a Twitter account run by indie developer Matthew Taylor, curating games by feeling rather than genre.[^1] Its core team today is Jenny Windom, Matthew Taylor, James Tillman and Victoria Tran, producing the annual **Wholesome Direct** and **Wholesome Snack** showcases and offering marketing and publishing services through the *Wholesome Games Presents* label.[^2]

## Wholesome Direct

The first Wholesome Direct streamed on 26 May 2020, featuring more than 50 wholesome indie games.[^3] Broadcast during the first COVID-19 lockdowns, that debut drew about 25,000 viewers; the most recent Direct reached 5 million views, carried by Summer Game Fest, Twitch, IGN, GameSpot, Steam and more than 650 co-streamers.[^2]

The showcase marked its fifth year on 7 June 2025, by which point it had featured 375 games across its history and raised over $200,000 for charities.[^4] Curation is selective: for the 2025 show, nearly 1,500 game submissions were whittled down to roughly 60 featured titles.[^5] The Direct has become a launchpad for the genre's biggest announcements — [[Fields of Mistria]]'s 1.0 release date, for example, was revealed at the 2026 show.[^6]

## Relationship to cozy games

"Wholesome" and "[[cozy-game|cozy]]" are overlapping but not identical labels: *cozy* usually describes how a game feels to play (safe, low-stakes, gentle), while *wholesome* describes the emotional register the curators select for — comfort, compassion and coziness in Taylor's original framing.[^1] Many games sit comfortably under both flags, and the Wholesome Direct has become the de facto annual showcase for the cozy end of indie gaming.
