**Dorfromantik** is a peaceful building-strategy and puzzle game by Berlin studio Toukana Interactive, in which players place hexagonal tiles to grow an idyllic village landscape.[^1] It entered early access on 25 March 2021 and became one of the most decorated German indie debuts of its generation.[^2][^3]

## Gameplay

Players draw tiles from a procedurally generated stack and lay them out to form forests, villages and waterways; forming groups of matching landscape earns points and completes quests, which unlock new tiles and biomes.[^1] It supports both score-chasing and purely creative play.[^1]

## Development and release

Toukana Interactive was founded in 2020 by four students — Luca Langenberg, Sandro Heuberger, Timo Falcke and Zwi Zausch — who studied game design together at HTW Berlin; Dorfromantik is their debut title.[^2] The game originated as a prototype for a Ludum Dare game jam (theme: "Keep it Alive") and was built in Unity.[^4]

After early access, the full 1.0 version released on PC on 28 April 2022,[^5] followed by a Nintendo Switch version on 29 September 2022[^6] and a macOS version announced for 25 June 2026.[^7]

## Reception

Dorfromantik won two prizes at the Deutscher Computerspielpreis 2021 (the German Computer Game Award): Best Debut and Best Game Design.[^3] The developer's press kit also lists Best Game at the German Developer Awards 2021.[^2] Its board-game adaptation went on to win Germany's Spiel des Jahres in 2023.[^8] The game's tile-laying calm made it a touchstone for meditative building games like [[Tiny Glade]].
